Chapter 15
Dario
For the most part, the warehouse is still empty. Weâre cooling it on the hot cars for a hot minute, so there isnât much in here except our own black sedans. They all look the same. Armored glass. Reinforced doors. All of them bulletproof. Heavy. Slow. Safe.
I left instructions for Marco when I went out to buy flowers and pick Sara up. I see that he carried through on them, too, no matter how absurd they might have seemed to him. Thatâs another thing I like about Marco. He doesnât give me flack.
I let Sara in through the big steel back door. It opens right into the expansive part of the warehouse. This one looks similar to the last warehouse now, but for the type of car being housed here. Wooden crates and old boxes in the corner. The cars all lined up, nose to bumper, three deep in four neat rows. The building has no windows, which suits all of us fine. A compound surrounds it, and to get in, you need to have the code for the gate. The offices are in the back, all of them being shit rooms that are poorly constructed. All the back doors, also heavy steel, are locked. There are two bathrooms down the hall and then a kitchen of sorts to top it all off, with a fridge and microwaveâall left here from the last occupants. There are also cameras wired throughout the building and on every single angle of the outside.
My men are here tonight, but you wouldnât know it from the inside of the place. The big industrial lights flicker and whine overhead. Sara steps in ahead of me. She gapes at the small table thatâs already set for two, sitting in the middle of the warehouse off to the right of the lineup of cars. I donât know where Marco found that table or those chairs, but he did a good job and he did it fast. The table folds up and the chairs also look like shit, but whatever. At least itâs here.
A sputtering candle cuts through the dimness. The lights overhead are off for the most partâalso by my instructions. Only a few remain on, around the perimeter by the entrance.
âWould you care to have a seat, my lady? We have reservations for two.â I hold out my hand, and Sara laughs. She doesnât look like she wants to humor me with it, but after a minute, the laughter just bubbles out of her.
âJesus, you should never work at a restaurant. You sound totally cheesy.â
âWell, then,â I huff, walking forward to pull out her chair. I motion grandly, bowing from the waist. âMaybe your opinion will change after you taste the food.â
âPlease, dear god, tell me you didnât make it.â Sara sits and I push in her chair. Or, I try to, but the legs catch on the floor and grind to a halt. She laughs again and scoots it forward.
âStay right there. Iâll fetch it.
